Common Car Accident Injuries

Car accidents can be very stressful. Not only is it a time when people are looking for somebody to blame, but it’s a time when there may be some physical injuries to cope with.  Some of these injuries could be serious and could involve head, neck or spinal related injuries.

The most common car accident related injury is whiplash. It can quite often be brushed off as though it’s not anything to worry about. However, whiplash can be much more serious and potentially dangerous than it might first appear.

Depending upon the severity of the injury, whiplash may prevent the movement of the neck and the head. It usually involves some kind of damage to the muscles in the neck. It can also mean that the nerves and the ligaments have been affected too. Your doctor might prescribe painkillers for you.

Other head and neck injuries can also occur. TBI or traumatic brain injury is very serious and can occur if you are hit on the head or you bang your head.  It can lead to a fracture of the skull or haemorrhaging of the brain – this can result in serious injury with brain damage.

The medical profession don’t know everything there is to know about the brain. It’s also very difficult to diagnose brain injuries. Usually a CT Scan or an MRI machine needs to be used. Symptoms of injury include seizures, anxiety, headaches and memory issues.

Another injury that can be very serious is that to the spine. In the most severe of cases, it can lead to permanent paralysis. The cervical discs and spinal cord are essential to being able to move. If there is damage to any of these, there could be problems with movement, breathing or even bladder and bowel control.

The internal organs are also very important to our wellbeing. The spleen, kidneys, heart and lungs can all be damaged in a car accident. Other injuries might include those to the limbs, finger or toes.

Even if you are very lucky and you don’t get hurt in a car accident, then your car can get damaged.
